Escape the heat wave this summer using this 22-Tonne AC

Right now, across Chennai and throughout India, the "tension" of the summer heat is at an all-time high. With the mercury crossing 40°C (and feeling more like 50°C in Chennai) in many cities, stepping outside feels like walking directly into a hot furnace. Everyone is looking for a way to beat the heat, but on the outskirts of Chennai, in Gummidipoondi, one person cracked the secret. They seem to have their own natural climate control.

While the surrounding areas are scorched and dusty, this farm remains refreshingly cool. Under the deep green canopy of mature trees, the air is thick with the sweet, heavy aroma of ripening fruit and a breeze that feels significantly lower than walking in the city. It is a place where nature is doing exactly what it was meant to do: provide life, shade, and abundance.

The National Fruit

It is no coincidence that this farm is thriving. India is the undisputed "Mango Capital" of the world, accounting for over 40% of global mango production. While most traditional orchards struggle with water scarcity during these scorching months, modern agriculture has found ways to turn the tide. This farm had planted trees with a spacing of 10m x 10m but there are other techniques like High-Density Plantation (HDP) and Ultra High-Density (UHDP) which now allow farmers to get massive yields from smaller plots of land, provided they have the right irrigation solutions in place.

The fruit is very popular with the masses due to its wide range of adaptability, high nutritive value, richness in variety, delicious taste and excellent flavour.  It is a rich source of vitamin A and C. The fruit is consumed raw or ripe. Good mango varieties contain 20% of total soluble sugars. The acid content of ripe desert fruit varies from 0.2 to 0.5 % and protein content is about 1 %.

A 10-Year-Old Secret to Success

The secret behind the lushness of this Gummidipoondi farm lies beneath the soil. Ten years ago, a specialized drip irrigation system was installed using high-quality PVC and Irrigation pipes by the expert team at AGS Irrigation (manufacturer of irrigation systems). Despite a decade of use, the system functions perfectly today, delivering water and nutrients for all the entire farm.

Because of the precise automation system that was installed, a single person is able to maintain all 9 acres of the farm. Instead of manual watering, the system uses a fertigation unit to mix organic nutrients like cow-dung with the water, ensuring the trees stay healthy and pests stay away without harsh chemicals.

The plants were put in the ground around 2010 and grew into mature trees by 2015. Today, those 15-year-old trees—spanning varieties like the honey-sweet Sendura, the legendary Alphonso, the juicy Rumani, and the fleshy Banganapalli—produce a staggering yield of around 22 tonnes. The owner just consumes a few kilos and sells the rest to the local market, as this is a true passion project.

The ever-green farmhouse

It is hard to believe that 15 years ago, this very landscape was completely barren. It was nothing but a complete dry waste land until a visionary looked at the landscape and decided that the simplest way to improve it was to plant a few trees. He planted a variety of plants including Mango, Guava, Chiku, and Indian Gooseberry, an entire ecosystem was built where nothing once grew.

It was a project born out of a genuine love for nature — a project that turned a piece of dry earth into a calm serene natural place to escape the intense stress of the city life, finally leaving the world a better place than he found it.

The person who started this whole project is my Dad.
